LL97 Benchmark

NYC building energy rating lookup: score, EUI and emissions from the public filing

Every covered building files an ENERGY STAR score (1-100, where 50 is the national median for the type), a site energy use intensity (kBtu per square foot per year) and total greenhouse gas emissions under Local Law 84; the city publishes the filings and, from the score, the letter grade displayed at the entrance under Local Law 33 as amended by Local Law 95 of 2019 (A 85 and above, B 70-84, C 55-69, D under 55, as published on the city's benchmarking page). The free lookup returns the filed figures for any of the 24,899 buildings in the 2024 set against the median for the same type in the same borough.

Source: NYC Open Data, LL84 Building Energy and Water Data Disclosure (public domain), 2024 LL84 filings, buildings of 25,000 sf or more, one row per tax lot. Property type, floor area and emissions are self-reported by the filer; medians over buildings reporting the field. Limits: emissions factors in 1 RCNY 103-14; penalty rate USD 268 per tCO2e from the LL97 page. Data as of 2026-11-03.

Citywide medians by type

ENERGY STAR median across all 24,899 buildings in the set: 69.0; site EUI 69.2; GHG intensity 5.0 kgCO2e/sf. 4,930 buildings (19.8%) have no score, usually because the type is not eligible for one in Portfolio Manager.

Limits of a single score

The score is normalised for weather, size and hours, the EUI is not, and both come from the owner's own meter data and type selection. The peer report sets your building against the 10 nearest-size filings of the same type, which is a narrower and more useful comparison than a citywide median or a letter grade.

Paid report

USD 39 one-time: your building vs the 10 nearest-size peers of the same type (borough first, citywide when the borough has fewer than 10), percentiles in the full pool, 2022-2024 trend, both LL97 limits and the arithmetic exposure. Checkout opens shortly; the free lookup and pages work meanwhile.
